Chapter 19

Act III: Rachmaninoff (6)

----------

Xiang Cai was hit by a big burger that fell from the sky. He never thought that the male god he admired would offer to help him himself!

If it weren't for the other three roommates currently resting in his dormitory, Xiang Cai would yell to express his happiness.

He covered his mouth with his hands and kicked his two long legs in the air.

He was surprised to find that a roommate who hadn't fallen asleep, was shocked to witness himself tossing in the dark.

"Xiang Cai, what's the matter with you?"

"..." Xiang Cai quickly put his legs down and lied, "I'm doing some bicycle crunches."

“You really work hard." The roommate admired him with longing. "I saw you also stretching your legs in the night exercises. When can I be as flexible as you?"

"It's probably going to be in your next life." Xiang Cai honestly replied, "If you can't go down the crossbar right now, then you won't ever be as flexible as me."

"..." The roommate was silent, then turned over, pulling the quilt to his head and going to sleep.

Xiang Cai: ...? Why is he so impolite that he didn’t even say good night to me?

...

In the early morning of the next day, Xiang Cai enthusiastically went to the vocal teacher to borrow recording equipment. He was a top student, so the teacher gave him the classroom key without hesitation, allowing him to practice in the vocal classroom during night exercises.

The vocal teacher asked him: "Xiang Cai, I heard Teacher Chu say that you want to sing two roles by yourself? Don't force yourself."

"You can rest assured." Xiang Cai smiled, "I borrowed the recording equipment to solve this problem! I have a friend who can help me with the post-production, and I will harmonize myself."

He didn’t know how this matter spread, but it didn’t take long for the whole class to know that the proud little prince of their class decided to tackle the final exam alone.

This was akin to a highly difficult level in a game. Others had to team up to participate in the battle. They also had to pick each other's equipment, level, and data capabilities. Finally, they would fight because of the ‘uneven distribution of stolen goods’.

However, regardless of what others thought and did,
Xiang Cai was armed and determined to go into battle alone.

The students in the class gossiped a lot about his behavior.

Ever since Xiang Cai switched to the Musical Theatre Department, some people in the class waited to see his blunder — all those who could be admitted to the Huawu Affiliated High School had heavenly pride, and thousands of people signed up for Musical Theatre Department every year. Only a handful were admitted. Each of these twenty-eight people had their own pride. On what grounds could Xiang Cai be better than anyone else?

In the eyes of many people, Xiang Cai was a misfit, from the inside out. They had been waiting for the little prince to have to lower his noble head and take the initiative to join a small group.

But after waiting and waiting, not only did he not lowered himself, but instead, beyond their expectations, he sprinted towards a higher goal!

Someone chewed the root of their tongue sourly behind him. After being heard by Qi Ji, she taunted them sharply.

"Your waist is not as flexible as us girls’, and your range is not as high as us girls’, but your mouth is more broken than us girls’!" Qi Ji said, "You will have time to figure out when you start your boys’ group. You might as well join us girls' group and try it first, I promise we’ll let you feel the warmth of the extraordinary sisters!"

"You……!"

"Who am I? I am a fairy, naturally cute and eccentric who has descended down to earth. Those the likes of you should quickly kneel before me"!

In the end, if it wasn't for Xiang Cai running to Qi Ji and pulling her away, it was estimated that Qi Ji would tear the gossiping man by hand that day.

Xiang Cai was both touched and amused again. Seeing that her arguing made her hair messy, he helped her to untie her hair, combed it with his hands, and made a lively yet sturdy bun.

He had very light movements with his hands, but his speed was fast, and hadn’t pulled a single of Qi Ji’s hairs.

Qi Ji said, "Xiang Cai, is there anything you can’t do? You can even handle a girl's hair!"

Xiang Cai answered, "What's so difficult? Before I went on stage with my partner, I would also help comb her hair!"

"... Why is it your dance partner again?" Qi Ji muttered.

"What did you say?" Xiang Cai didn't hear clearly.

"It's nothing." Qi Ji changed the subject. "Oh yeah, who did you find to help you with the accompaniment? Why have I never heard you mention it?"

Xiang Cai: "..."

He stiffened, feeling guilty, and stuttered.

He lied yet again.

"Nobody, it's the radio drama troupe ..." He felt that his nose would grow a centimeter longer with every word he spoke, "... I found a great help."

Qi Ji only thought it was a post-production god in the troupe, and was quite happy for him.

It wasn’t that Xiang Cai was unwilling to tell her the truth, but there was just too much involved. If he honestly said that it was Wang Qingyun, Qi Ji will become curious as to why the relationship between them had become so close. And if he said a few more words, Xiang Cai definitely couldn’t hide the whole demo thing.

Fortunately, after a while, the bell rang, and Xiang Cai escaped the disaster. He vowed in his heart that this was definitely the last time he would lie to Qi Ji.

...

This class was a script class. The teacher took the students to study the rival play of the two main characters in Rachmaninoff.

This musical was an interpretation of one of the most painful chapters in Rach’s life, however the mood of the entire musical was not heavy, and even contained many witty and humorous scenes.

The comedic relief of the whole drama was the male lead, Dr. Dahl.

Dr. Dahl was a psychologist and a viola enthusiast, but his viola skills ... was very challenging to the audience's ears.

In the play, Dahl hypnotized Rach in order to open his heart and let him see his idol Tchaikovsky in the illusion — as to who this Tchaikovsky was? Naturally, it was Dr. Dahl himself who portrayed Tchaikovsky!

So what the students had to learn today was this rivalry scene full of the humorous nuances.

The teacher saw ‘Dr. Dahl’ jumping up and down, awkwardly imitating a ballet pose and dancing onto the stage, proudly saying to ‘Rach’: "Yes, I am Tchaikovsky! Rach, I admire you very much, I hope that you will adapt my Sleeping Beauty ballet suite into a piano song!"

— "Stop!"

The performance teacher angrily clapped to stop them.

In front of him, a dozen ‘Dr. Dahls’ stood in a row stiffly, listening to his lesson.

The performance teacher said, "What's the matter with each of you? Would you like me to call the dance teacher over and let her see how you guys dance?" He angrily said, "Dahl entered the stage with ballet, not Latin dance or folk dance. Position your legs, hands, and necks like mine. It’s in the extension, in the positioning!”

In musicals, singing, acting, and dancing were not separated, but it was difficult for an actor to master all three.

The dozen or so classmates who played Dr. Dahl had been stuck on this seemingly simple bridge for a long time. They were all ballet laymen. How could they show their relevés?

"In this moment, you are no longer Dr. Dahl but Tchaikovsky! Tchaikovsky who can dance ballet!" The performance teacher yelled.

He didn’t know who muttered: "... but the real Tchaikovsky can't dance ballet."

"..." The teacher angrily ordered them to separate immediately. They cannot move onto the next part until they've learned this part.

The students looked at each other and could only divide themselves into small groups, going into a corner to study hard.

Xiang Cai was the only student praised by the teacher. He had profound ballet skills, moving and stretching his hands and legs, all with a ‘ballet flair’.

The teacher looked at him lovingly, like he was a golden doll.

Taking advantage of group practice, Xiang Cai pulled Qi Ji aside and taught her the basic movements.

Qi Ji also played Dr. Dahl, but she had never learned ballet, after all. She didn’t leap in the air like a little swan, but like a big white goose.

One taught and one learned. Suddenly a boy approached them.

"Xiang Cai." The boy called out to him.

Xiang Cai turned to see the ‘male duck’ who sat near him in class— who previously mocked Qi Ji’s physique in public and said that she could act in Hairspray due to her weight. Who's tears shed as a result of being punished by the class teacher to do the split.

"What?" Xiang Cai thought the boy came to look for trouble and so asked him coldly.

"That ..." The male duck was flushed and embarrassed. "... I can't dance ballet that well, can you also teach me?"

----------

The author has something to say:

Yes! Finally, a boy took the initiative to communicate with Xiang Cai!
